Lampedusa

Wer Lampedusa hört, denkt unweigerlich an Flüchtlinge.

(Wikipedia)

Whoever hears Lampedusa inevitably thinks of refugees. But what's happening a bit further out on the open sea for years now is unbelievable! Traffickers petting migrants on tight boats. Death goes along. The fact that people go overboard and drown cruelly in the eyes of others is incredibly terrible. Out of anger and incomprehension, I brought this theme to screen already in 2011. At that time hardly anyone was interested in Lampedusa. Well, how is it today? On my oil painting I arrest a terrible scene. A child is drowning. It struggles to survive in the headlights of a helicopter. Nobody comes to his aid.

All of Europe looks away and closes its eyes to this problem. It's a story that can not be put into words. It starts with the question of why we do not help the people and the countries in their homeland, but exploit them there. It continues with the question of why we leave Italy completely alone. But all that is not my way of dealing with this topic. As an artist, I have no fixed opinion, but bring the topic on canvas, so that everyone can form his own opinion. I want us not to look away anymore, but to look.

The oil painting Lampedusa still seems to be the only one of its kind after all those years. Number one on the internet for years and often used in magazines. Here I ask all the other artists in the world: Why do not you paint? Why do not you write songs when you are musicians? Why do not you play this when you're an actor? Why do not you send that, you directors and program managers? Give Lampedusa and the people a face! Then we can talk, empathize and act!

Lampedusa is located about 205 kilometers south of Sicily and on the shortest route 138 kilometers east of the Tunisian coast, about the same width as the city of Monastir. Lampedusa is considered the southernmost island of Italy. (Wikipedia)

A quel tempo quasi nessuno era interessato a Lampedusa.

"The Fear of Lampedusa", Oil Painting

The oil painting "Fear of Lampedusa" looks threatening at first glance: It is the deepest night, only the moon on the horizon donates a little light and the oversized waves in the foreground rise mercilessly on both sides of the center of the picture. A completely overloaded boat has made its way through the waves to the center of the picture. The figures standing close together on the boat are decorated in black and gray tones. Out of the faceless crowd, one person has gone overboard and is being lit by a helicopter coming from the horizon. Will the unknown survive this dramatic scenario? Will he and the others make it to the faraway land in the background? With his work, the artist points out the already almost forgotten refugee crisis and the dramatic circumstances in which these helpless people are trying to come to a rescuing Europe. Genre: Social Critical Painting Technique: oil paints on canvas Style: Realism / Impressionism Special thanks to Athena!

Lampedusa, Refugees and Migration Policy in Contemporary Art

Christian Seebauer is one of the few artists in the world dedicated to environmental and social criticism. With his artwork 'The Fear of Lampedusa' he is likely to have created the world's most famous oil painting dedicated to this terrible topic. The oil painting of Lampedusa plays on the open sea. Here hundreds of refugees drown far from our attention. The oil painting could not be more dramatic. It shows huge waves that seem to engulf the refugee boat and people. On board are people without belongings, who want to save themselves in a better world. But also on board are tugs, which play a nasty game and which human lives simply do not care. For them, people are just a commodity. Ten thousand dollars for one? Death or alive? Even if a helicopter illuminates the scene, any help for the people comes too late. This oil painting is one of the best-known socially critical works of contemporary art and has been widely published in newspapers and the media.

(Wikipedia)
