Sturm in Portovenere

Ma perché no?

Sturm in Portovenere

Storm in Portovenere oil painting

The work "Storm in Portovenere" is one of the better-known oil paintings with the theme Portovenere. The artist shows the harbor town Portovenere almost like a look through the keyhole. The scenery of the old Ligurian architecture looks like a torn curtain between the sky and the sea. Both are upset while Portovenere seems to be resting in another world. The artist skillfully depicts Portovenere, but without putting it into the foreground. This leaves room for the viewer to dream. He can decide for himself whether he is venturing into the picture and into Portovenere or whether he is feeling upset. Anyway, artist Christian Seebauer sets the scene in an overwhelmingly beautiful dynamic with a dark purple to pink cloud heavens and an equally colored sea. Breathtaking are the yellow to orange points of light, which absorb and rediscover the colors of Portovenere in the bay. The work is colorful and can hardly be outdone in intensity. And yet the Küsntler seems to attach importance to restricting the color palette to a selection of yellows, lilacs and violets. The artwork shows a Portovenere almost without blue, without black and without green. The artist creates an incredible suspense on the coastline. While the boats lie sheltered in absolutely calm water, he paints only a few centimeters a rough, churning sea with equally rough brushstrokes. Fascinating in the sea are the transparencies and the shine through of the yellow background color. Just as fascinating are the coarsely painted buildings, which seem to be filigree and enchanting, if only because of the style of painting. Seebauer has painted another oil painting a little later, in which he shows Portovenere from the viewpoint of the offshore island of Palmaria. Both works are thematizing the Ligurian coast by storm.

Storm in Portovenere peinture à l'huile
