Mystic landscapes: Oil paintings with motifs from China

Great Wall oil painting

The Great Wall of China (Wànli Chángchéng) is still considered the largest and longest building in the world. According to official Chinese authorities, the total length should be as much as 8,851 km.

The first ramparts are said to have already been built around 214 BC. Originated under the emperor Qin Shihuangdi. In the Jin dynasty, the building was constantly expanded and also led through extremely mountainous areas. In my picture, the Chinese wall follows the natural contour lines in many curves, before finally disappearing in the soft light of the horizon.

For this motif at Jiankou I chose an unusual screen size of 200 x 80 cm and applied many different non-covering layers of paint from back to front.
